Australian Matildas make Soccer History

The Matildas are making history again, with the first time in Australian football history a female name has been added to the annual awards night for both the A-League and W-League. A triumph for womens sport in Australia. The awards night being called the Dolan Warren Awards, the joint awards gala will be held next Tuesday in Sydney and have been renamed to recognise both Johnny Warren, the late Australian Socceroos legend, and Julie Dolan, who captained the Matildas in their first-ever international, back in 1979.

Aussie striker Michelle Heyman has welcomed the latest good news for the Matildas who are currently ranked 5th in the world and favoured to win a medal at this year’s Rio Olympic Games.

Commenting, Heyman said:

“We would love to see more support. It would make a big difference in terms of being No.5 or No.1 in the world,’’

“Seeing the men and women recognised equally at the awards, at a national level, is great and a sign things are starting to slowly change.”
